May 20 2016 - 10:00am - 11:30am

About:
Join the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (ESRC) as we welcome Dr. Claudia Baldwin to speak on her research, which focuses on flooding and communications in Australia. Dr. Baldwin lectures in Regional and Urban Planning and is a founding member of the Sustainability Research Centre at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia.

Flooding is quite obvious when it occurs, but it’s hard to imagine what it will be like ahead of time. One reason is the inability to predict extent and timing precisely. But another reason is that the techniques we use to communicate risk might not meet the needs of those most vulnerable.

This presentation refers to two research projects in Australia. One investigated communication of risks prior to flooding in a Brisbane industrial area and reveals a mismatch of media and needs. We note also that the focus of reporting on flood impact is on property damage and cleanup, rather than the less visible health and environmental impacts. The other project tested effectiveness of four different visual methods to generate community discussion about future risks associated with extreme events and sea level rise in a coastal community.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
